It was 1996 when Larry Page, a PhD student at Univeristy of Stanford was writing a dissertation about a new kind of search engine. He noticed that in scientific world the more authors appeal to one article, the more it is important and reliable. This is called citation analysis. The same rule can be used while evaluating Web page. In 1998 Larry Page and his friend Sergey Brin published an academic work where they described how this algorithm works. In the same year they set up Google. However, the name PageRank is a trademark of Google, the patent is assigned to University of Stanford, where Page and Brin studied. The university gave an exclusive license rights on this patent to Google.
